Our Mission
As an independent journal for the Mount St. Mary’s University community, The Brownson Record seeks to promote the Catholic vision of the human person in the modern world. Through earnest reflection on the True, the Good, and the Beautiful, we constantly seek to understand the Mount’s institutional vocation as a university at once Catholic and American. Consistent with the Mount’s undergraduate mission, we aim to nourish a culture in which issues of political, social, and religious life are encountered with rigorous intellectual and moral standards.
Our Vision
The True: Ours is a time in which widespread consensus on observed reality is near impossible to come by. Ideology reigns supreme, causing basic truths that in a bygone era were once accepted as self-evident to now be held in constant debate and uncertainty. As murky as the waters may seem, we at The Brownson Record hold that through a combination of diligence, patience, and humility the Truth of these matters can be discerned and professed.
The Good: Flowing from our commitment to Truth, The Brownson Record recognizes that there is also a knowable Good. We reject the postmodern fallacies of moral subjectivity and relativism, and instead courageously pursue a one true objective morality.
The Beautiful: At The Brownson Record we renounce the tendency to fall into anguish and despair at the realization that we live in a fallen world. Rather we eagerly look to the Beauty of creation, confident that it has, and forever will shine through the darkness. Whether it is the miracle of the human person or the majesty of nature, we profess a resounding love for the world.
